“Have you ever gotten everything you ever wanted?”
Robot slowly turned towards Purple, who had not taken his eyes off of the horizon. The graveyard Robot worked at, while a bleak setting to be in constantly, was located just on top of a hill at the far end of the town. Not a far trek away, but it was high enough that Purplecould look back down and watch the street lights flicker on every sunset.
Robot continued to stare at Purple, and at the corner of his eye, he could almost swear Robot’s eyes softened for a moment, “No, never.” It sighed, “But I was very close, once.”
It was Purple turn to turn his head towards Robot, but when he did, it had already looked back at the town, “Oh really?” He lightly teased, “Robots have wants?”
“Yessss…” Robot chuckled, “can’t a robot dream for a bit?”
Purple shrugged, “Depends on who’s asking”
Robot hummed in response, his shrug seeming more like a ticket out of the topic rather than a way to dismiss his weak attempt at playful banter.
However, despite Robot’s curt responses and overall gloomy demeanour, Purple would be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy his time around Robot. There was nothing of substance when they both talked, and it seems like he and Robot may never find a reason to connect to one another— and yet, there they sat, shoulders pressing against one another as they gazed silently at the sleeping town below.
Robot’s expression twitched slightly, “You know,” it turned towards Purple, “You remind me a lot about her.”
Her?
“Her?”
For a split second, Purple could swear he saw a hint of fear in Robot’s dimmed eye-lights, “I—“ it stammered, scrambling for, what was likely, a cover for its slip-up, “Yeah, her— uhm.. —Some other person who used to… visit… here…”
Purple stared back at robot, who chose to stare back into the horizon, its expression unreadable. It’s body stiff.
“Right… keep your secrets,” he scoffed, “I don’t need them anyways.” His gaze travelled back to the horizon once he realised he wouldn’t meet robot’s, as if it would get rid of the sting of the fact that he may not have known Robot as much as he thought he did.
